Hockey stick colors: which ones stand out on the ice

Against white ice, the colors with the most contrast are the deep ones: blue, red, green and orange. Lighter colors like pink, yellow and light blue stand out most against the boards, dark pants and a crowd in front of the net. Black does neither. It matches the puck, the tape and almost every other stick out there.

What your stick is competing with

The sheet is white. The boards are usually white with ads on them. The puck is black, and so is most of the gear around it. A stick only reads clearly when it differs from whatever sits behind it, and that background changes every few seconds as the play moves from open ice to the corner to a pile of skates in the slot. No single color wins in all three places.

Colors that hold up against open ice

Blue, red, green and orange are dark and saturated enough to separate from a white sheet. That is the plain contrast argument: a dark color on a light background has an edge you can see. In a scramble you can pick out your own blade from the three others reaching for the same puck. We build blue, green and orange in Senior, and red and blue in Intermediate.

Colors that show up in traffic

Pink, yellow and light blue work the other way around. They read brightest against dark jerseys, dark pants, gloves and the boards, which is most of what surrounds a stick when the play tightens up. Yellow is the one people notice from the stands. Pink is the one that gets talked about on the bench. Both are Intermediate colors for us, and Junior comes in light blue and light pink.

Black is the color that hides

Carbon fiber comes out dark, so black became the default and nobody revisited it. The result is a rink where every stick looks the same, including yours. That is habit, not engineering. We wrote the longer version of that argument in colored hockey sticks.

What we have not measured

We have not put any of this on a stopwatch. No reaction-time testing, no video study, no claim that an orange stick makes your passes land. What we can say is the part every player already knows: ten black sticks against the boards look identical, and yours does not have to. Past that it is preference, so pick the color you actually want to look at for a season.

Color never changes the stick

Every Maila is 100% carbon fiber with one flex and one build per size. The paint has no say in how it plays, and every color in a size costs the same. What changes is the size class you pick.

Only handedness changes beyond that, left or right, same price either way.

Where color earns its keep

Visibility on the ice is the fun part. The practical part happens off it. Ten sticks lean against the boards and yours is the one you grab without reading the butt end. A kid finds theirs in a locker room full of black. A coach can call a line by color. None of that needs a study to believe.

Common questions

Does a bright stick make me easier to defend? Maybe, at the margins. A defender who can see your blade can also see where you are about to put the puck. Nobody has shown us numbers either way, so treat it as a wash and pick on looks.

Will the color wear off? Every stick shows wear where the blade meets the ice, colored or black. Ours is finished to hold up in normal play. If it breaks in normal play within 30 days we replace it once.

Can I get any color in any size? Not yet. Senior comes in pink, blue, green and orange. Intermediate comes in pink, red, yellow and blue. Junior comes in light blue and light pink. Size first, then pick from what that size offers.

Pick the size, then the color

Color is the easy decision. Fit is the one worth getting right, so start with how to choose a hockey stick for length, flex and handedness, or run your height and weight through the size and flex finder if you want it settled in ten seconds.
